Daily Deviation

Given 2006-12-28
Editorial: Film Australia by ~axis85 is fairly simple and clean but brings something different to the table of typographic layout. The slanted paragraph works so well in this design that it looks normal. ( Suggested by designersBLOCK and Featured by depthskins )

haha thanks Steppums, I was shocked myself when I got a DD for one of my layouts :D I didn't think many editorial publication work would of made DD's - oh well I'm just incredibly lucky :D

Hehe, no, you're talented.

I don't think I've ever seen a photomanip get a DD either. I wonder if any ever has? Like, I mean, not a photomanip that is mostly digital painting either.

I think there has been but not of any animals you know what I mean ;) I don't think any person from the RPG personalising area has gotten one, it would be awesome if someone did though :D

Hehe, yeah...that's what I meant. And it would be really awesome. I think a lot of our work (I mean from the goddesses of our little corner of art...like..you. lol) is just as good/better than a lot of the stuff that gets a DD anyway.

oh ho ho keep buttering me up :D yeah I agree I see loads of great stuff out there from our RPG area and not a lot of features of it - peeps have no idea how advanced horse-manips are until they go looking for 'em ;) maybe if they check out Steppy's account they might get the idea :D

lol, hey, I'm only telling the truth. Hehe.

Gaww, my stuff is like, still really ugly...though I am working on it and I recently was taught bg blending by Ami, so I'm working on that now and it's coming along nicely I think. It'll give me a lot more freedom in the future I think :)

I just reallized I say "I think" waaay too much. lol

Amazing use of colors and font.
Though I beg to differ from all here. The slant sides doen't really look good to me. It makes me feel that you have mistakenly angled the edges of the text.
And you have reused the pic(the man with a gun). Only one big pic at the corner side would have been sufficient.
If you want to convey movement, make those images of same dimensions(both width and height) and just put them in the same horizantal manner separated by some space.

shush about the man and the gun  I had a deadline to meet and I didn't want to waste another precious hour searching for a decent image but yes I will have to change that now... I got the time to do it ;)

and your suggestion sounds really good - it could relate to the slide show idea very well, I'm gonna try that out

thanks for the comments and compliments :D much appreciated

indeed. i really like the slanted paragraphs. everything else has been tried in one way or the other and look great here too. but the slants really set it a part. good job!

thank you - slanted paragraphs are certainly not something new :D I think people forget they can do it in Indesign, it really does bring a different dimension to a layout

Windows fonts... Good god. I'll love you if you say you hate Comic Sans....

It's the most overused, overrated streak of p**s on this planet. It doesn't even look nice! lol

i like the color scheme you got going. i like how you keep a consistancy with the use of the angle, however i think it would be a stronger piece if both sides of each image was at an angle...because right now when i look at it, i get this weird vibration between the slanted side and the straight vertical sides. Also, i think that if you increased the angle to be slightly more slanted, it would look more like a purposeful slant design versus a printing mistake...if that makes sense? Overall, you did a real nice job and i would love to see more pages...if there are more pages lol.

I dont know about the sides of EACH image at an angle -- I like the play between the vertical and slanted lines. I get the "printing error" vibe on the first two pages. I'm not sure if it is because its such a large block of text (or maybe something to do with the image in the background?) but it seems as though the angle of the text is not as pronounced on page 5 as it is on 6-7. pages 6-7 look awesome. really awesome. i think the slanted and vertical lines are working great here.

congrats on the dd

I agree I've got far too much body copy in one block on the 2nd page and that's probably what makes the first DPS look more angled than the second - possibly, but I'm pretty sure they are the exaxt same angle...

Thankyou so much for the comment and compliment it's great to get an insight from another persons view, after looking at the same design for so long it all starts to look too dull

:D thankyou heaps for the critique, the colour scheme was actually changed to green in the last instant at first it was maroan, as in the curtains of the cinemas, but I somehow had to link it up to my front cover which I haven't uploaded yet and luckily green is a colour people associate with Australia ;) Hmm... I will try out your suggestion about both angles being slanted and giving them even more of an angle, I was just concious of how much lee-way I could give the reader but as you say it does look like a mistake woops... The reason why I chose an angle was to apply some movement and direction in the peice as film is a 'motion picture'. I hope this makes sense

the other pages from this publication are not all uploaded yet and no others use the slant body copy... I will come back to you when I upload them all and please do if you have any more comments and critiques about them say something :D I'm one of those peeps who need opinions to find out what works and what doesn't :D So thanks again :boogie:
